SNOW EMERGENCY IN ROME

Please note that a snow storm is expected starting from the early hours of the day tomorrow, Friday, worsening toward evening and continuing on to Saturday. for this reason Mayor Alemanno has declared that the use of tire chains or snow tires is a must from 6 am on Friday to midnight on Saturday and tomorrow Friday ) schools and pubblic offices will remain closed. Furthermore, at the XX Municipal Police Department, located on via Caprilli 11 the Crisis Centre for the snow emergency has been set up for the Xx Municipality.

The XX Municipality has on hand seven snow removal vehicles as well as supporting means. About 600 qof salt is already available as well as 400 shovels which can be given vased upon need when you call the operation centre of the Municipal Police

Apparently a licence has been granted to open a new games room with slot machines right below Il gian Fornaio in the new Olgiata Shopping Plaza. It's not very reassuring to know that for years Olgiata residents have been asking for a centre where young people could meet and hang out and this seems to be the answer? What has the world come to? It this the only way we can think of for a meeting place for our kids?

This Shopping Plaza opened about one year ago and since then it has witnessed more than one activity opening and closing shortly after. Even the future of MacDonald's seems to be uncertain... perhaps we can only hope that this will also happen to the slot machines... no money, no business ....

ROME UNDER A THICK COAT OF SNOW

The notorious snowfall which took place in Rome over twenty years ago was nothing compared to the one that started yesterday morning and continued on till late night. The Northern outskirts of the city were already experiencing difficulties in transportation and mobility since the day before but this morning the Italian Capital city woke up to a quite, still bright light, an unforgettable embroidery which has covered cars, roofs, roads. so many trees, the beautifully Roman umbrellas, have come down under such weight and those who had underestimated the precise forecast, which had repeatedly announced cold temperatures and heavy snowfalls, left their cars parked along the streets and many of these got damaged by the falling trees.

Olgiata, the famed residential complex of beautiful villas, with its 16th Century castle, appears this morning as a quiet nativity scene.

The Supermarket located it the Olgiata shopping center is open today but the pharmacy isn't.

The Mayor of Rome has declared that only those cars with either snow tires or chains on their wheels are allowed to circulate until midnight on Sunday.

BEWARE OF ASPARTAME!

SWEET POISON....A MUST READ!

In October of 2001, my sister started getting very sick. She had stomach spasms and she was having a hard time getting around. Walking was a major
chore. It took everything she had just to get out of bed; she was in so much pain.

By March 2002, she had undergone several tissue and muscle biopsies and was on 24 various prescription medications. The doctors could not determine
what was wrong with her. She was in so much pain, and so sick she just knew she was dying.

She put her house, bank accounts, life insurance, etc., in her oldest daughter's name, and made sure that her younger children were to be taken care
of.

She also wanted her last hooray, so she planned a trip to Florida (basically in a wheelchair) for March 22nd.

On March 19, I called her to ask how her most recent tests went, and she said they didn't find anything on the test, but they believe she had MS.

I recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister if she drank diet soda? She told me that she did. As a matter of fact,
she was getting ready to crack one open that moment.

I told her not to open it, and to stop drinking the diet soda! I e-mailed her an article my friend, a lawyer, had sent. My sister called me within
32 hours after our phone conversation and told me she had stopped drinking the diet soda AND she could walk! The muscle spasms went away. She said
she didn't feel 100% but, she sure felt a lot better.

She told me she was going to her doctor with this article and would call me when she got home.

Well, she called me, and said her doctor was amazed! He is going to call all of his MS patients to find out if they consumed artificial sweeteners of
any kind. In a nutshell, she was being poisoned by the Aspartame in the diet soda... And literally dying a slow and miserable death.

When she got to Florida March 22, all she had to take was one pill, and that was a pill for the Aspartame poisoning! She is well on her way to a complete
recovery. And she is walking! No wheelchair! This article saved her life.

If it says 'SUGAR FREE' on the label; DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on 'ASPARTAME,' marketed as 'Nutra Sweet,' 'Equal,' and 'Spoonful.'

In the keynote address by the EPA, it was announced that in the United States in 2001 there is an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus.
It was difficult to determine exactly what toxin was causing this to be rampant. I stood up and said that I was there to lecture on exactly that
subject.

I will explain why Aspartame is so dangerous: When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts
to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants. The methanol
toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus.

Many people were being diagnosed in error. Although multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, Methanol toxicity is!

Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers.

The victim usually does not know that the Aspartame is the culprit. He or she continues its use; irritating the lupus to such a degree that it may
become a life-threatening condition. We have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptotic, once taken off diet sodas.

In cases of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, most of the symptoms disappear. We've seen many cases where vision loss re turned and hearing loss
improved markedly.

This also applies to cases of tinnitus and fibromyalgia. During a lecture, I said, 'If you are using ASPARTAME (Nutra Sweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc)
and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting, pains, numbness in your legs,
Cramps,
Vertigo,
Dizziness,
Headaches,
Tinnitus,
Joint pain,
Unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss you probably have ASPARTAME poisoning!' People were jumping
up during the lecture saying, 'I have some of these symptoms. Is it reversible?'

Yes!
Yes!
Yes!
STOP drinking diet sodas and be alert for Aspartame on food labels! Many products are fortified with it! This is a serious problem. Dr. Espart
(one of my speakers) remarked that so many people seem to be symptomatic for MS and during his recent visit to a hospice; a nurse stated that six of
her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence!

Diet soda is NOT a diet product! It is a chemically altered, multiple SODIUM (salt) and ASPARTAME containing product that actually makes you crave
carbohydrates.

It is far more likely to make you GAIN weight!

These products also contain formaldehyde, which stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and thighs. Formaldehyde is an absolute toxin and
is used primarily to preserve 'tissue specimens.'

Many products we use every day contain this chemical but we SHOULD NOT store it IN our body!

Dr. H. J. Roberts stated in his lectures that once free of the 'diet products' and with no significant increase in exercise; his patients lost an average
of 19 pounds over a trial period.

Aspartame is especially dangerous for diabetics. We found that some physicians, who believed that they had a patient with retinopathy, in fact, had
symptoms caused by Aspartame. The Aspartame drives the blood sugar out of control. Thus diabetics may suffer acute memory loss due to the fact that
aspartic acid and phenylalanine are NEUROTOXIC when taken without the other amino acids necessary for a good balance.

Treating diabetes is all about BALANCE. Especially with diabetics, the Aspartame passes the blood/brain barrier and it then deteriorates the neurons
of the brain; causing various levels of brain damage, Seizures, Depression, Manic depression, Panic attacks, Uncontrollable anger and rage.

Consumption of Aspartame causes these same symptoms in non-diabetics as well. Documentation and observation also reveal that thousands of children diagnosed
with ADD and ADHD have had complete turnarounds in their behavior when these chemicals have been removed from their diet.

So called 'behavior modification prescription drugs' (Ritalin and others) are no longer needed. Truth be told, they were never NEEDED in the first
place!

Most of these children were being 'poisoned' on a daily basis with the very foods that were 'better for them than sugar.'

It is also suspected that the Aspartame in thousands of pallets of diet Coke and diet Pepsiconsumed by men and women fighting in the Gulf War, may
be partially to blame for the well-known Gulf War Syndrome.

Dr. Roberts warns that it can cause birth defects, i.e. mental retardation, if taken at the time of conception and during early pregnancy. Children
are especially at risk for neurological disorders and should NEVER be given artificial sweeteners.

There are many different case histories to relate of children suffering grand mal seizures and other neurological disturbances talking about a plague
of neurological diseases directly caused by the use of this deadly poison.'

Herein lies the problem: There were Congressional Hearings when Aspartame was included in 100 different products and strong objection was made concerning
its use. Since this initial hearing, there have been two subsequent hearings, and still nothing has been done. The drug and chemical lobbies have
very deep pockets.

Sadly, MONSANTO'S patent on Aspartame has EXPIRED! There are now over 5,000 products on the market that contain this deadly chemical and there will
be thousands more introduced. Everybody wants a 'piece of the Aspartame pie.'

I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it is.

And isn't it ironic that MONSANTO funds, among others, the American Diabetes Association, the American Dietetic Association and the Conference of the
American College of Physicians?

This has been recently exposed in the New York Times.. These [organizations] cannot criticize any additives or convey their link to MONSANTO because
they take money from the food industry and are required to endorse their products.

Senator Howard Metzenbaum wrote and presented a bill that would require label warnings on products containing Aspartame, especially regarding pregnant
women, children and infants. 10pt">

The bill would also institute independent studies on the known dangers and the problems existing in the general population regarding seizures, changes
in brain chemistry, neurological changes and behavioral symptoms.

The bill was killed.

It is known that the powerful drug and chemical lobbies are responsible for this, letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting and
uninformed public. Well, you're informed now!

MALE CAT SEEKS A HOME

I am still trying to find a home for little Tony, a beautiful, shy,
blue-eyed, 4-year old male cat. Preferably with a woman/girl. His "mum
and dad" have separated and neither is in a position to be able to look
after him. His mum loves him very much but her parents WON'T have him
in the house. He is now living completely on his own in the old
apartment (without furniture) because his mum doesn't know where to keep
him. She feeds and cuddles him every day. A woman alone, or a couple
with both members being cat lovers would be the best. He has never been
sick. His birthday is 3 July. She is desperate so I am trying to help
her. Please help me. He is Siamese-type, sterilized and has all his
vaccinations. He has been an inside cat (with terrace) only and is

A GREAT RESPONSE OF SOLIDARITY FROM OLGIATA

When Vivi Vejo visited the rooms from which the La Storta Carits operates, distributing food and meeting needly families, all the food shelves were empy. When we asked what they would do when people were going to show up today and tomorrow to ask for food, they simply said :" Well, we're just going to have to tell them to come back next week...".

This is when Vivi Vejo didn't waste any time and put out a message among Olgiata Residents, Welcome Neighbor members, Imago XX and Olgiata Nostra and over 100 shopping bags full of pasta, rice, cookies, canned food, tomato sauce, tuna and more were brought to the two drop off areas in Olgiata.

The shelves were no longer empty.

Our sincere thanks go out to all those wonderful people who donated, and the many associations which participated.

We hope that this won't be a single event but that all those who helped this time will continue to participate in this Solidarity Project as we plan to collect food once a month.

Our next collection will be on March 3rd.

THE NEW OLGIATA CHURCH

Brick by brick, this time it really is going to happen. On Saturday January 28th at 11 am, everyone is invited to the setting of the first stone of the Olgiata Church, named after the Apostles St Peter and Paul . Don quirino, San Pancrazio's Parish Priest , is bringing a lot of bricks so that it will be the children and the teenagers who will set the first stones. For years youngsters have been crying out for a meeting place. The Church will serve a population of 10,000 people and will have classrooms for Catechism, a theatre which can hold up to 450 people, and a Church, as well as a home for three priests.

Live music and fire works will welcome this celebration on Saturday Janurry 28th and Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno has ensured his presence.

Le Cinque Terre

They are one of the most beutiful, breathtaking location in Italy. (The Five lands) because they are five medieval villages located along 18 km of coast, not far from La Spezia, where Romanticism writers such as Lord Byron, John Keats and Percey Bysse Shelley found their inspiration of lots for their famous works. Few people know that already, after the terrible earthquake that hit and almost destroyed this beautiful area, is now almost totally ready to welcome tourists again. Monterosso will soon open the centre with its beutiful old road, Vernazza, known to be the most suggestive one, is already open to the pubblic. Corniglia, with its natural rocky towers, looms over the sea from up above. The via Azzurra (the Blue way) is ready and by Easter all the couples in love may take a stroll along the Via dell'Amore (the Love Way). The many beaches along the coast still cherish their original beauty, untouched by man.

Arts in English are looking for kids aged between 10 and 14, who enjoy singing and acting and have a reasonable level of English, which they would like
to improve.

Auditions will be held from 15:00 to 18:00 on 4 February at the Ostia Antica Social Centre, Piazza Gregoriopoli 2, Ostia Antica for those who would like
to participate in a series of 10 workshops which will be run in English from mid-February to May 2012 and who could be potential cast members for the next
Arts in English production: Oliver Twist, the Show (December 2012). This show will be based on the book 'Oliver Twist', written by Charles Dickens whose
200th birthday is being celebrated this year.

The participants would be working with a vocal coach, an acting teacher and a choreographer. On successful completion of the workshops, those chosen to
be in the show will have the opportunity to rehearse with the Arts in English cast from September 2012 and participate in the Christmas production.

MUGGING NEAR OLGIATA

This afternoon a young woman, as she was coming out of her office in the Olgiata Shopping Centre, was mugged by two eighteen year olds who ripped her bag and pulled her down so that she hit her head and was immediately taken to the hospital with head injuries. This is an unusual episode for Olgiata, a tranquil and peaceful residential district in Rome. It is highly advisable to hold on to your purses and to stay away from dark corners.

U.S. citizens and green card holders should be aware of a new reporting obligation that will affect returns filed in 2012. Form 8938 must be filed with
the annual tax return if the value of the taxpayer's foreign financial assets exceed certain thresholds, which vary depending on 1) whether the taxpayer
lives abroad or in the United States and 2) whether the taxpayer files a joint return or not. Form 8938 requires the reporting of information pertaining
to those foreign financial assets but does not give rise to any new tax. It's also important to note that form 8938 does not substitute the FBAR (Report

Vivi Vejo and Welcome Neighbor have been called to help the needy families living in the Olgiata la Storta area. It is a concrete reality that this area presents a contrast among its population, between Olgiata, San Nicola and La Giustiniana residents and those families which carry out cleaning and gardening jobs, often immigrants, who live in the surrounding areas.

All of their children go to school, and many of them attend the Soglian and Amaldi schools.

The Principal of these two schools has asked us to help with an after school program, from Monday to Friday, organizing workshops in English, Italian, art, music and sports. in order to give children an incentive to study and at the same time to help those who don't have anyone at home after school to stay with them.

An hour of your time a week would be enough!

Let's help those in need and let's give a good example of solidarity and welcome .

CAN WE HELP THERE KIDS

I have just received this request for help from the Dacia Association for which Vivi Vejo finances an afterschool program for immigrant children.
They are working on organizing a week in Rome for the Rumanian Folkloristic Ensemble of the Moldavian Repubblic: these kids will have a full Concert program
, in Rome on the 18th December at 3pm at the Rumenian Accademy on via José de San Martin, 21st December they will participate at the general meeting with
the Pope, with a Concert at St Peter's, on 23rd December at 6:30 pm concert at the Sant'Ilario di Poitiers Church, on via Cologno Monzese, 6, the kids
will bring their Christmas carols to the Rumanian Embassy.
These kids have won many important international prizes and they are bringing a touch of Rumenian folklore around the world. So far only 1,000 euro have
been raized to help cover their expenses for the trip and the room and board while they are here. They plan to stay from December 17th to 25th. If anyone
has any idea of places where they could stay and if anyone wishes to make a donation, please let me know.
We'll try to organize a fund raizer tomorrow at the Welcome neighbor Christmas lunch .

prima di Natale abbiamo veramente bisogno di sostegno, oltre la festa di venerdì al doposcuola stiamo preparando con grande difficoltà una settimana a Roma
dell' Ensemble folcloristico romeno della Rep. Moldova, i ragazzi avranno un programma ricco di concerti a Roma: 18 dicembre ore 15.00 all'Accademia di
Romania, in via José de San Martin, 21 dicembre parteciperanno all'udienza generale della SS Benedetto XVI con un concerto in piazza San Pietro, il 23
dicembre, ore 18.30 il concerto alla Chiesa Sant'Ilario di Poitiers, in via Cologno Monzese, 6, i ragazzi porteranno i loro canti Natalizi all'Ambasciata
di Romania e la Rep. Moldova. Ho proposto alle aziende moldave e a Confindustria Moldova di sostenere i ragazzi ma fin adesso non ho avuto nessuna risposta,
il direttore del liceo mi ha comunicato che sono riusciti a raccogliere 20 mila lei moldavi che sono quasi mille euro e qualcosa, somma troppa piccola
per il viaggio ed il soggiorno a Roma, abbiamo combattuto molto per far diventare una realtà questo progetto, personalmente da volontaria ho speso tempo

HUGE SUCCESS FOR THE OPENING OF THE OLGIATA PARK

This afternoon, under a spring like sun, hundreds of people gathered to enjoy the newly opened park adjacent to the Olgiata South Gate. Vivi Vejo has often times brought up the subject of the park with the XX Municipality and with Olgiata Verde, the company which has signed the agreement with the city of Rome to clean and renew the park. Lots of children of all ages happily gave way to the new playground and filled the air with laughter and joy. This is how it all should be. Simply happiness and joy! But let's not forget to keep this park clean! That is all up to each of us. We may go running or bike riding on the bicycle paths inside the park or we may walk our dogs, but let's curb our pets and pick up after them. If we are all just a little bit more civil, we can all enjoy life much more!

Shakespeare's least known play. It is believed to be the fruit of a collaboration between Shakespeare and John Fletcher.

The current adaptation no longer sees the action take place in ancient Greece , but rather in 1940's Italy. Two brave, stron gand skilled RAF pilots, who are absolutely inseparable, crash into enemy territory (Italy) and are taken prisoners; little do they know that their apparently unbreakable friendship will be tested to its limits ...

A physically inventive and atmospheric production which focuses on human frailty in a light hearted yet very telling way.

On Monday 12th there will be a charity performance for "Nuovi Orizzonti", 50% of the profits from this performance are going to be donated to this amazing group of people who have given hope and life to a lot of people and run many programs to aid young people in socially challenging environments.

On the topic of cats, do you suppose anyone/or at St George's might be interested in 2/3 adorable kitten? One female (tri-coloured) that I nicknamed 'teabag';
one 'tiger' with distinct black stripes, and bold "Little Tiger" (leopard-mixed) definitely wants to belong to a home.

Also 'Reiki/Ricky' - the big beautiful orange cat, probably aged 2 to 3, abandoned by the farmer. Very sweet temperament and neutered, with a stump of
a tail, is more domesticated than wild.

CANADA LOOSES NDP LEADER JACK LAYTON TO CANCER

OTTAWA - Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton has died.

The party issued a statement this morning, just weeks after a gaunt Layton held a news conference to announce he was fighting a second bout of cancer.

The party says Layton died peacefully at 4:45 a.m. ET today at his Toronto home, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Like some political Moses, Jack Layton led his people out of the wilderness, only to die within sight of his own Promised Land.

In the preface to his 2006 book, "Speaking Out Louder," Layton wrote a passage that turned out to be eerily prescient:

"Oftentimes, life's highs and lows are inextricably linked. That has certainly happened to me and, occasionally, the ups and downs were virtually simultaneous."

In eight years as leader of the NDP he took his party to heady heights, but fell himself to a tragic disease at the age of 61.

Layton rebuilt his party, muted its internal squabbles, united its fractious factions and weaned it from old-style dogma to present a face more palatable
to middle-class voters.

He starred in the most successful election in the history of his party and won the title of Opposition Leader, which had eluded his more storied predecessors.

Layton hobbled across the hustings last spring, leaning on a cane against the pain of a surgically repaired broken hip. He shrugged off the effects of treatment
for prostate cancer. His dogged campaigning as Le Bon Jack won him a majority of the seats in Quebec, a cherished but illusory goal for New Democrats for
decades.

He slew the Bloc Quebecois and saw the long-dominant Liberal party reduced to a battered hulk.

Layton was ready for a new Canadian political alignment that would pit left against right across the moribund Liberal middle.

But the victory cup was dashed from his lips by the onslaught of another, more brutal cancer that wasted him to skin and bones and killed him just 16
weeks after election day.

Layton went, in one short summer, from triumph to tragedy and left behind less a political legacy than a political question: What if?

He was a man who carried politics in his genes. A great-grandfather was a Father of Confederation. His grandfather, a Quebec provincial cabinet minister
in a Union Nationale government. His father, a Tory cabinet minister under Brian Mulroney.

He was a believer. He made that clear in the first sentences of "Speaking Out Louder:"

"Politics matters. Ideas matter. Democracy matters, because all of us need to be able to make a difference."

Layton was born in Montreal on July 18, 1950. He grew up in Hudson, Que., an Anglo community complete with a celebrated yacht club. It was a small town,
but hardly typical of small-town Quebec.

He was a child of the placid Fifties in a well-off family in a well-to-do town. He was a teen and university student of the Sixties, with all that went
with a decade that has claimed the word "turbulent" as its singular descriptive.

Layton took his BA at Montreal's McGill University in the late 1960s, when radicalism blew through campuses like a stiff gale. The rebellious vigour of
the times led him to political activism. He doffed the conservativism of his family and embraced socialism.

"Events in the Sixties and Seventies were formative for me," he wrote in "Speaking Out Louder."

"My path grew out of the tumultuous days of the October Crisis."

He became an activist, canvasser and organizer for a community movement in Montreal as a student.

By the time he earned his master's degree at Toronto's York University in 1972, his political genes had clearly activated. He had studied under Jim Laxer,
a key figure in the Waffle movement that rocked the NDP at the time.

Layton taught at Ryerson University in Toronto. But by the time he received his PhD in 1984, he had already largely abandoned academic theory for community
activism and then the practicalities of municipal politics.

"I was hooked on local politics and neighbourhood engagement," he wrote.

First elected in 1982, he served on Toronto and Metropolitan Toronto councils for 20 years, honing his instincts and skills at the level of retail politics.
He was a politician in the mould of a people's tribune, with rolled-up sleeves, 14-hour days and seven-day weeks. Every hand was there to be shaken, every
story was there to be heard, every windmill was there to be charged.

His politics were those of the poor, the homeless, the alienated, the disenfranchised. He served as vice-chair of Toronto Hydro, chair of the Toronto Board
of Health and president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. He twice ran federally and lost.

Layton's first marriage to high-school sweetheart Sally Halford, which had produced two children, ended in 1983.

He would eventually team up with Olivia Chow, another municipal power-broker. Together they would become the go-to couple of the left in Toronto politics.
They rode a tandem bicycle along the waterfront, entertained, led rallies, marched in parades, ran for office and won.

Chow would follow Layton into the House of Commons in 2006. And she would be beside him in the dark summer of 2011.

In his rise, Layton gained a reputation as a brash, aggressive, even abrasive figure.

On a trip to Calgary for a meeting of the federation of municipalities, he raised local hackles with dismissive comments about the city, its appetite for
new buildings at the cost of older properties and even its ritzy new city hall. There was an outcry in the local media and Art Eggleton, then mayor of
Toronto, dispatched his own apology for Layton's comments.

He also gained a reputation as a master of the political stunt and the over-the-top comment. Some joked that the most dangerous place to be around city
hall was between Layton and a microphone, where one might get trampled.

Rightly or wrongly, the image of a loud lout shouting into the mike from the left side of any issue clung to him after he won the NDP leadership in 2003.

It was a leadership contest that pitted Layton and the trendy new left against Bill Blaikie and the traditional, Prairie populist wing. Blaikie was a United
Church minister in the best traditions of NDP and CCF champions of old. Layton was an academic and a firebrand. Blaikie was a Manitoban, Layton was from
Toronto, font of all evil for many Canadians, especially westerners.

Layton won on the first ballot and went into renovation mode. He began to rebuild and re-brand his party. He was a people person whose BlackBerry kept him
linked to hundreds of organizers, fund-raisers, recruiters and policy wonks. He worked through meals and vacations, pushing himself and his goals.

He toned down the wild rhetoric, although he raised an uproar in the 2004 election campaign by accusing then-prime minister Paul Martin of responsibility
for the deaths of homeless people because he failed to produce affordable housing.

Despite that, Layton won his Toronto-Danforth seat in Parliament in 2004, an election that left Martin's Liberals with a minority government. The NDP raised
its seat total to 19 from 13.

It was a start. Layton criss-crossed the country to raise the party profile and in doing so, became the public face of the NDP. The trademark grin, the
brush moustache, the earnest optimism, the trademark head tilt were the tools of his trade. The hellfire rhetoric cooled. This was reasonable Jack, optimistic
Jack, the Jack of the kitchen table, not the street corner.

The approach seemed to strike a chord with regular folk.

In 2006, Layton's campaign produced 29 seats, but boosted its vote to 2.59 million. Momentum was building.

In 2008, Layton campaigned not as a third-party leader, but as a prime minister-in-waiting. The vote total slipped slightly, but his campaign won 37 seats,
just six short of its then all-time high under Ed Broadbent.

By 2011, Layton was ready for a breakthrough. Despite the prostate cancer diagnosed in early 2010, despite the mysterious hip fracture, he was everywhere.
In Quebec, his working-class French and his call to action on behalf of the ordinary family struck a note with voters grown weary of the Bloc and leery
of the Liberals.

On May 2, about 4.5 million people cast ballots for the NDP, giving the party 103 seats 59 from Quebec and making Layton leader of the Official Opposition.

Just over two months later, looking pale and gaunt, he called a news conference to say he was suffering from another, unspecified cancer and he would temporarily
step down as party leader. Nycole Turmel, rookie MP and veteran labour leader, took over in the interim.

MATEMU BAND

The CIES ONLUS, through its Youth Aggregation Center, MATEMU, is participating in the 24th Edition of the International Community Fair on Saturday, September 17th at the American Overseas School of Rome with short reviews of this involving experience.

The multicultured Matemu Band, composed of kids from many different nationalities, has been created thanks to the work of the whole Center and to the experience of two instructors/operators. Some of these kids have entered the band already with musical skills while others have come to know music thanks to the daily workof MATEMU. .

The show will last about 40 minutes. The kids will play four clasical pieces:

Feeling good
Halleluja
The house of the rising sun
Forma e sostanza

This music will be played by the Matemu kids and some parts will be rearranged in rap. .

A break dance performance will also take place during the day. The MATEMU kids will perform various choreographies realized throughout the year

- Three or four free style/rap exhibitions specifically studied by the wrap operator at the Center will be presented during the day.

The performances will highlight the main workshops carried out throughout the year by kids from the Center. The Creative-artistic activities which take place every afternoon thanks to artists and educators, include more than 70 adolescents and young people, Italian and foreigners, turn this place into a creative and experimental citicenship, unique in its style.

The language of music, theatre, dance and play, photography, video making, cinema and figurative arts help, in this space, to grow role models of living together and communicate based on respecting cultural, socialand general differences.

This event aims to represent the positive and creative Energy that kids, children of immigrants, born in Italy or refugees in our country, together with Italian kids are able to share the fundamental values of Italian people, which are: equal rights , respect and communication among different people.

We are extremely pleased to announce that Arts in English has been chosen as one of 12 regional amateur theatrical companies to participate in a theatre
festival, 'Rassegna Tuttinscena', at the Teatro della Cometa (via del Teatro Marcello 4, opposite the Campidoglio). We will be performing a revue called
Night & Day (in English) on the evenings of 17 and 18 June 2011 at 21.00hrs. Night and Day will take you on a musical journey from Venice to Paris to London
and finally to New York using the cities as a backdrop to the well known songs of Porter and Gershwin.

We really hope that you will support us in this exciting event, to cheer us on in front of the judges!
The Rassegna is organized such that each participating company is given a certain number of tickets at 13 each for their own performances, and therefore
the tickets for our show must be bought through us by sending an email to

A GREAT SUCCESS FOR THE ECOLOGICAL DAY

3pm, Olgiata South Gate, the crowd gets larger and larger... they all wear their white T-shirts and hold a rake, a plastic bag, a shovel and gloves in their hands and off they go. They attack the trash that's been left along the sidewalks: a mattress, blankets, old clothes and an old TV are only some of the things which turn up. vivi Vejo onlus has managed to group together many different associations in the Olgiata area but not only, as the American International club of rome approaches and helps out too.

The Pubblic Works Representative is there too, in his T-shirt and shorts and is picking up trash.

At 5.30 the party moves to the Olgiata Sporting Club, the newly build complex which is worth millions. Hundreds of people flood the whole room and the winners of the 2010-2011 competitions are announced. The prizes range from trips to Greece to memberships to the Olgiata Sporting Club, riding lessons, treasure hunts and so on. Young artists exhibited their lovely work and the lovely sun and the spring breeze was certainly a most favourable one, till we meet again, nexst year with more art workm more essays and more people.

An afternoon spent cleaning up at Olgiata's south gate was certainly an eye opening experience. I don't think any of us were aware of how polluted the streets
were until we had to clean them ourselves. So thank you Vivi Vejo and AMA for giving us an opportunity to spend some quality outdoor time and helping the

This Tuesday, May 17th, Italian teacher Raniero Bei and his students from St. George's International School- (and friends like you!) will be cleaning up
Parco Papacci. They're meeting at 10 am at the entrance to the park, along with AMA workers who will supply additional manpower and the necessary supplies,

In addition, on Saturday, May 28th, all individuals and local and international organizations are invited to take part in a general clean up outside the
largest residential complex in Europe, on the outskirts of the Vejo Park. For the last couple of months, Vivi Vejo onlus has been organizing conferences
in Northern Rome schools together with A.M.A. Technicians in order to better educate students on recycling and respect for our surroundings.

Meeting point for this event is at the Olgiata South Gate (La Storta area) at 3pm. A.M.A. has supplied 500 T-shirts and all the material necessary for
clean up. In case of adverse weather conditions the event will be postponed to Saturday, June 4. At 5.30 pm Vivi Vejo invites everyone to the awards
presentation of the Literary and Art Contests winners. This is the first time that an international school takes part in this Competition, with essays
in English from St George's British International School, as well as quite a lot of Italian private and public schools in Northern Rome.

All together we can make Rome a cleaner and more civil place to live.

Everyone is encouraged to participate. TOGETHER FOR THE EARTH!

BREAK-INS CONTINUE I NNORTHERN ROME

This morning another family woke up to find that someone had actually been browsing around their room while they were asleep, and it wasn't a member of the family or a household pet. Lately we seem to be hering these news once a week and they all bear the same similarities: a dril, asmall hole just beneath the door handle of the window frame and the handle is turned, the door is easily opened and silently, undisturbed, these unexpected guests, guided only by a special torch they wear around their head, casting a focused light only on what they need to see,tiptoe around beds and nightstand and grab any gold jewlery they can pawn sometimes they take lap tops or other electronic devises and are seldom caught. Even the safer guarded residential Complex in Northern Rome, still much safer than anywhere else in the eternal city, has recently been hit by frequent break-ins. Police say that they have a track, a couple of suspects they hope to get as soon as possible. They are good, efficient and fast, but if the guards still had use of trained police dogs, they probably would have caught the mysterious couple by now.

So until then, do lock all doors and windows, lock your shutters before going to bed and invest in a very good alarm.

Celebrate EARTHDAY 2011 (Sat. April 2nd)... YOU CAN DO IT! Earthday clean-a- thon events are taking place in Rome on April 2nd (April 9th in case of rain) in two target neighborhoods, giving well deserved face-lifts to Rome's inner city "African Quarter" (Municipality II) and to Rome's suburban "Parco Volpi" (Municipality XX).

What to expect? A full day of activities as students of all ages, artists, journalists, personalities, public authorities,and private property owners meet over music, art, and civic spirit with one common target: the need to participate in a "hands on", apolitical project fuelled by civic responsibility for the common good of our great city. Feel the emotion of being part of real change.

Communicate your EARTHDAY message to your friends, to the Romans, to the old and the new world, to the universe! Enter with a brush stroke into the history of Rome! Indifference and apathy belong to the past come celebrate our environment all together.

WHEN TO MEET AND WHERE? 10:00 13:00 restore Parco Volpi, via della Farnesina, 76 (bring along a dust mask, metal brush, scrapers, and a small shovel if you have them, and wear work clothes!)

Once again Rome's residents will come together and pitch in to erase senseless grafitti (not to be confused with street art) demoralizing our homes and storefronts, remove unauthorized posters defacing our buildings and walls, collect trash that degardes our public walkways and parks, and plant new life in an abandoned park. Young people from different schools and nationalities will also be taking on the project of re-qualifying the urban landscape by designing panels (3x2 mt.) surrounding the new Metro B1 line construction site with their own art and messages.

Why the African Quarter? To celebrate Rome's urban environment. Apart from the widespred tagging that desecrates every angle of this lively neighborhood, the African Quarter has a great deal that's worth saving. This residential area boosts some of Rome's most historic churches, catacombs, mausoleums, many of Rome's most prestigious schools, and even the Piper, a nightclub made famous by the likes of Patty Pravo, the Beatles, and Pink Floyd. Lying along Rome's oldest road via Salaria, the African Quarter was the orginal site of the rape of the Sabine women, and its homes were used as the backdrop for epic Italian films such as DeSica's "Bicycle Thief". Nevertheless, while AMA crews regularly combat urban degradation within the city's historical core, surrounding areas like the African Quarter are largely neglected due to limited city funding and neighborhood apathy, which has sadly translated into an open invitation for senseless, unwanted tags.

Why Parco Volpi? To celebrate Rome's natural environment. Tucked inside one of Rome's higher density suburbs along via della Farnesina, Parco Volpi is a vital outdoor venue for the area's residents (of all ages) to socialize, enjoy sports and contact with nature. Abandoned of maintenance over the past serveal years, it has fallen into a state of decay making it unsafe for children and elderly.

Soon these kinds of problems typical to many areas in Rome will be seeing some fresh change. Rome's II Municipality (which covers Flaminio, Parioli, Pinciano, Salario and Trieste) and Rome's XX Municipality (covering Rome North) are busy launching volunteer-driven initiatives which aim to draw in concerned citizens to work directly through the schools in changing the mentality and the face of the neighborhood. It is hoped that the other 18 municipalities will take inspiration from their lead and follow along to heighten civic consciousness all over Rome and put a new, clean, shiny face on our beautiful city.

This morning at 5am another villa in Olgiata was broken into. As always, the burglars broke in through the one window that didn't have closed shutters and as always, they seemed to know exactly where they were going and where to find what they wanted.

They were interrupted by the residents who woke up as they heard strange noises and were seen running away through the Golf Course.

These incidents are happening more and more in rome and the worse thing is that they come in while people are sleeping.

Make sure you have your alarms on and close all shutters when you go to bed at night.

An initiative to be highly praised. On Saturday, St George's students together with Vivi Vejo onlus and Retake cleaned up the walls of the La Storta station parking lot. Vivi Vejo volunteers picked up the trash in the parking lot and along the street that leads up to Via Cassia and ... guess what.. a group of italian residents complained that the graffiti were a form of art work that should have been left on the wall and that foreigners have to stop taking over their city... I wondered whether the trash, left over food, glass, plastic we picked up from the side of the street is also considered a"form of art"... in any case, I'd be pretty imbarrassed to to have to watch while foreigners pick up my own trash because maybe I'm just too lazy to do it?

Aihe: English-language film in Rome

With the recent closure of the Metropolitan cinema, lovers of English-language
film have lost a major outlet here in Rome. However, the Film Studio in
Trastevere has expressed an interest in developing a program of such films
(both current and classical) and an informal working group (The Silver Screen in Rome)
has been discussing with the Studio management programming possibilities.

The group felt that it would be useful to get some feedback from a broad range of potential
viewers and, to this end, has developed a questionnaire which will enable us to develop a
screening program. Your assistance in responding to the questions included in the
survey form will only take a few minutes, but will be most useful and very much appreciated.

A link to the questionnaire is provided below. Please pass this on to any friends who are

Dear Paula,

The other evening we discovered by chance a delightful new Vietnamese restaurant here on the Cassia, near the crossroads with via di Grottarossa. It opened about one and a half months ago and I am thrilled about it and truly hope it will take off despite these difficult times. The service is excellent, genteel and soft-spoken in a way that is rare to find here in Rome. The food is delicious, the dishes are groomed to perfection with stunning presentation. The restaurant is quiet, pleasant and airy, rather reminiscent of restaurants in Vancouver. It is up on the first floor, in the centro commerciale, and there is an ample terrace space overlooking the Cassia, that will no doubt be wonderful in the summer months. Prices are reasonable. Now it just needs more customers, and I really think the "Olgiata crowd", and foreigners in the area would love this place. I think I'll even start to plan my next birthday party there for next October! So please help spread the word in any way you can to help make this place a success!

Finally, after a long unexplainable wait, the traffic light which is located at the intersection with Via Cassia and Via Bragaglia will be moved after the road has been widened and for months the traffic light has been blocking the way, stuck in the middle of the road.

Hello everyone,

Here's your chance to do your good deed for the day.

Rome's Caritas has just added 100 beds to its hostel shelter at the Termini
Station and now needs blankets, sheets and towels for them. Used items are
welcome!

They accept donations of these items 24 hours a day, at the entrance to the
hostel on Via Marsala 109. Towels of any sort are appreciated. Single sheets
and blankets are preferable, since they have single matresses, but they will
also of course accept double bedding, since that is better than suffering the
cold or going without a sheet! Winter will be upon us soon.

Caritas is also able to arrange for pick up if anyone has a large donation ....

What to take to bed with you - not a joke .

Pretty neat idea. Never thought of it before.

Put your car keys beside your bed at night

Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents, your Dr's office, the check-out girl at the market, everyone you run across. Put your car keys beside your bed at night.

If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around. After a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

P.S. I am sending this to everyone I know because I think it is fantastic. Would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone. My Mom has suggested to my Dad that he carry his car keys with him in case he falls outside and she doesn't hear him.. He can activate the car alarm and then she'll know there's a problem.

Please pass this on even IF you've read it before. It's a reminder.

EXIT ROAD TO VIA GROTTAROSSA to S. ANDREA HOSPITAL

XX Municipio: The Municipality is working toward a connecting road from the GRA to Via Grottarossa and is hoping to have solved this issue by November 15. Meanwhile, the Director of S. Andrea hospital has asked for the intervention of the Municipal Police.

2. The first of seven interventions to realize new sewers and hydric systems has been financed by the Comune di Roma (over 4 million Euros) and within the year it will be allocated .The area involves Via di Baccanello (the remainig part) and all those streets located nearby (Via Femmina Morta, Via Fontana Morta Via Marcello Piccoli etc), which have been waiting for such interventions since the 70's

By the end of his legislature, Pubblic Works Assessore Stefano Erbaggi promises to accomplish the realization of all six remaining interventions ( Colettore Isola Farnese, via Tiberina,
Borgo di Cesano, via Grottarossa, via Anguillarese both Consortiums) and this first result gives him some hope.

Let's hope then that finally all these areas will be able to solve the absurd problems they've had with the sewers and the water.

3. Next week works will begin to fix damages on the side walk caused by the fire which badly damaged a few cars parked in the street.

4. Lighting on via Cassia. After one and a half years works have finally been completed to illuminate via Cassia.

5. Labaro Station: this station will finally reopen again from Monday, November 8th.

5. Two new sidewalks are about to be built on via Valle MuricanaA first intervention will be caried out at the intersection with Via Concesio, toward Rome, on the right side of the streetfor about 300 m while a second intervention will take place between the 3rd and 4th km in the section of the road which has absolutely no sidewalk which is necessary so as to reach to new Church.

It is so difficult to find the words to express the great void that our dear friend Mavi has left after a short illness. Mavi was one of the most generous
and kind people I have ever met. She always put other people first and was always there to help, active with her volunteer work with the elderly and a
member of vivi Vejo and Welcome Neighbor.
She left us yesterday morning, in a serene certainty that we'd all meet again.
Our deepest condolences to her husband Giorgio who has also participated to some of our meetings, and to her children and all of her brothers and sisters.

It's like a soap opera. The largest residential complex in Europe, located in the Northern Rome area, with a population of about 10,000 people, has been undergoing certain behind the scenes political issues.

Olgiata became a private residential complex on December 8th 1968, when its previous owner, the Marquese Incisa della Rocchetta, daughter of Count Chigi, signed a forty year agreement with the City of Rome Administration and the Construction company SOGENE to build roads and homes. The Consortium was established with a constitution which would expire in 2050. The Constitution of the Consortium includes closed guarded entrences to the compound and the management of the Country Club.

The 40 year agreement expired in 2008 and since then, so many groups of people inside Olgiata have been fighting one another on two fronts. While the board of Directors of the Consortium took liberty in changing the Constitution giving themselves power of Attorney and Judicial Representativeness with the City of Rome, as well as empowrement to deal with Real Estate within the Complex, other sued this initiative in order to stop the high costs of maintenance and avoid giving too much power to the Board. This law suit was lost by the Consortium and on October 15 2010, the Board of Directors of the Olgiata Consortium decided to appeal to Justice ... without calling for an Assembly nor asking premission to do this... what will happen next?
