| | GETAWAYS: DAY SPAS
In Imperial Rome, magnificent public baths were built with three main halls: the caldarium (hot bath), the tepidarium (warm bath) and the frigidrium (cold bath). Some structures also featured the sudatorium, steam bath and the laconicum, a dry steam bath. These thermal baths were public monuments and a meeting place, where all classes from the nobility to freed slaves could socialize. Romans still love their public baths, but nowadays, we call them day spas, and they have taken on a decidedly international flavor. These are some new additions worth trying.
Kami Day Spa The recently opened luxury facility, spread over three stories in a grand period building, brings the traditions of Japan, China, Thailand and Indonesia to Rome. Once you've been buzzed through the massive doors sculpted in Asian motifs, Kami's skilled spa therapists begin the pampering. Kami has developed its spa philosophy around a passion for physical, emotional and spiritual health. On offer are men's and women's saunas, a variety of body scrubs, body mask, massage, depilation, hair and scalp care, hand and feet care and much more. The spa uses products by the English cosmetic house, Elemis. Via degli Avignonesi, 12, (historic center) tel 06 42010039 www.kamispa.com St George Hotel Day Spa One of Rome's most exclusive spas strikes a delicate balance between sleek modernist style and the Imperial bath tradition. Three words: Amore (Love), Calore (warmth) and Passione (passion) describe the concept behind the spa's health and fitness program. Likening itself to a Roman Temple, the St. George wellness center is equipped with a Roman bath, sauna, Turkish bath and heated hydro-massage. In addition to aesthetic and body treatments, the spa offers traditional Thai massages and stone therapy. Trained spa therapists offer cosmetological consultation, and the wellness center staffs a personal trainer. Spa packages include treatments for both men and women.George Spa features products by Carita, the well-known French cosmetic brand. Via Giulia, 62 tel 06 686 611 www.stgeorgehotel.it
El Spa This atmospheric refuge offers an intriguing combination of treatments from a variety of cultures: Hammam (traditional Turkish bath), Indian Ayurvedic, aromatherapy massage with Bach flowers, Shiatsu, Swedish stone therapy, foot reflexology, and Thai massage. Following the Roman bath tradition of various pools, they offer a hot pool enriched with minerals, aromatic pool, and a cool pool to stimulate circulation, with breaks for massages between each dunking! Among the intriguing treatments the Mandi Lulur from Indonesia starts with a Balinese oil massage, followed by a sprinking of rice powder and a scrub, then a yogurt mask and bath with flowers.
