Written advertisements have undergone drammatic changes over the past two decades, due to the increasing pace of public communication in general. Long
texts aimed at an exhaustive explanation of the product have been replaced by short headlines, whose function is to effect immediate persuasion. Images
obviuously play a central role in this kind of communication, but the language chosen is not without importance.
This lecture will draw attention to specific linguistic strategies and grammatical features of language such as Italian and English, which are to be found
in present day advertising. It will be shown that their main function is to convey the information about the product to be sold, whilst keeping the audience
unaware that they are being persuaded.
