The grapes have been harvested and wine producers in the countryside surrounding Rome open their doors to the public. It's a great way to spend a weekend afternoon, driving through the roads flanked by vineyards, stopping to taste wine, nibble local products such as cheeses and cured meats, and perhaps, to take home a few bottles, bought at a great price, directly from the source. We've listed a few of the local wineries below, along with the best of the new local vintages. But first a bit of history:
We only need to look at ancient mosaics, ceramics, sculpture and frescoes and atefacts to understand the importance of wine (l'uva) in ancient Mediterranean cultures. The wine timeline goes as far back as 6000 B.C. , tracing its origins to corresponding areas of modern day Iran and (of all places), Georgia (former Soviet Union). But as civilization spread and empires fell, Greece, like the central point of a see-saw, became the most important point in the development of wine. The serpentine pattern of grapevines and harvest scenes embellished ancient vases and drinking objects, and were used on frescoed walls and ceilings. In Greek society, the production of good quality wine was considered a sign of culture. A person who drank wine was civililzed and one who did not was considered a "barbarian". About 1000 B.C., Greeks introduced wine producing methods to colonized territories of Northern Africa, Andalusia, Provence, Southern Italy and Sicily. In the 5th century, Sophocles called Italy "Bacchus' darling country" while other ancient writers attributed a different name to the lands inhabited by Illyrian populations settled along the Mediterranean sea regions of Calabria, Lucania, and Campana. So widespread and entrenched was Greek wine production that even today it is expected that especially in Italy, people grow grapes of probable Greek origins. Archaeological finds in Mediterranean countries and the Middle-East give testimony to the importance of wine as a valuable product within the economy as a precious exchange good. Their contribution to viticulture and oenology, the art of wine production and cultivation of grape and earth have been indispensable to the booming wine industry of today.
