John Cabot University's Italy Reads Program,
with the kind support of the Embassy of the United States and the Embassy of India presents:
THE ENGLISH THEATRE OF ROME
A world premiere
UNDER THE OVERCOAT
Inspired by Jhumpa Lahiri's Pulitzer prize winning novel,
THE NAMESAKE
From Calcutta to New York, from the pages of a battered book to the drama of daily life, UNDER THE OVERCOAT tells the story of the Ganguli family's move
into a new culture and the consequences of this change, particularly for the protagonist, Gogol. Named after the renowned Russian author, Gogol's dislike
for his nickname-come-official birth name will be the force that drives his struggle for belonging and acceptance throughout a play filled with colour,
vivid imagery and cultural fusion. So get on the train with them and enjoy the ride. But beware: you may want to hold on to who you are, because a name
is like an overcoat - take it away, and you'll feel the cold.
Adaptation by Alashiya Gordes
Directed by Theodora Voutsa
Original music by Rashmi Bhatt
Stage management by Eve Atkinson
Costume assistance by Chelsea Smith
Featuring: Natalie Accornero, Kaushik Barua, Rashmi Bhatt, Rosa Calderon, Michael Castelluccio, Gabriel Gougsa, Bill Guion, Anna Madden, Francesca Maggi,
